Our small group tours give you the opportunity to view the remote Catlins Coast. With over twenty years’ experience in these waters our guide will show you a coastline rich in wildlife and history. On your journey to the famous nugget shaped rocks you’ll observe not only diverse and dramatic scenery but unique wildlife that call this place home: the albatross, including the royal; the World’s rarest sea lion and smallest penguin; the Catlins largest colonies of fur seal and cormorant; and perchance the elephant seal, dolphin or yellow-eyed penguin, thought to soon be extinct from mainland NZ. Our tours depart daily with no prior kayaking experience necessary. We provide you with everything you need to have a safe and enjoyable experience.
Rise and Shine! As the sun goes up the early morning paddle crosses Oil Store Bay; it’s here we keep an eye for some Yellow Eyed Penguin heading out for breaky. We tally up the seals on the nearby rocky shore before returning to the historical launching bay.
Setting a leisurely course for the Nuggets we search out seals and sea birds as we make our way along the cliff edge. At the “Fish Bowl” we watch the steady activity of the colony whilst looking up at the envious visitors high above at the Nugget Point Lighthouse.

FIRST LIGHT TRAIL
As the sun goes up and the early morning paddle crosses the seascape, you’ll feel like the only person on the ocean, indeed a unique and authentic experience. As we head towards the breath-taking rock formations, locally known as ‘The Nuggets’, your knowledgeable guide will search for interesting and endangered wildlife to observe. The curious but playful fur seal could swim over to say hello. You may catch a glimpse of the yellow-eyed penguin or a visit from the albatross soaring in close searching for food. Once the sun is high in the sky, we’ll return to our historical launching bay. Trail time is a two-hour experience. Departure time is dependent on the season. Departure between 5am and 7am. Return between 7am and 9am. This will be confirmed upon booking.
NUGGETS WILDLIFE TRAIL
We set a leisurely course along the coastline, viewing the rocky islets that give you a sense of scale only achievable by kayak. Your experienced guide will seek out the rare and endangered wildlife that inhabit this area. You’ll watch the steady activity of the fur seal colony as they play between the water and rocky shore. You’ll marvel at the albatross if it comes in close and we’ll scan the sky for the vast number of sea birds flying above. The sea lion may roar below us, a dolphin porpoise past or a blue penguin dart by. From the wave eroded rocks referred to as ‘The Nuggets’, we’ll see the envious visitors high above at The Nugget Point Lighthouse before we journey back to our historical launching bay. Trail time is a three-hour experience 9am – 12pm or 2pm – 5pm

WHAT TRAVELERS SAY ABOUT US
The best way to start the day
Jared took us on the early morning sunrise session and it was absolutely stunning. As the sun came up it was the most peaceful and beautiful start to the day we could’ve hoped for. It was tailored to our own abilities, we felt safe and well taken care of the whole way. I would definitely recommend this to anyone travelling round the Catlins, it’s easily the best way to see the area.
We absolutely loved our kayak tour! Spectacular from start to finish. We visited the amazing Nuggets which were so beautiful! The wildlife we saw was incredible and I will never forget.
A wonderful experience
We couldn’t have hoped for a better first time experience kayaking – we saw a plethora of wildlife with a wonderful guide. We had everything we needed to have a great time on the water. Simply awesome!
Best way to see Nugget Point
Amazing experience. Jared was an excellent guide and showed us loads of cool wildlife including, little blue penguins, albatross and fur seals. It was a very relaxed trip with the best view of Nugget Point, and it was just us there. Highly recommend.
Our New Zealand highlight
This trip had to be the highlight of our two weeks in NZ! We saw rare New Zealand fur seals up close, gannets, shearwaters, petrals and best of all was the albatross gliding around us just a few metres above us!! A memory i’ll keep forever.
I have been on many kayak tours around the NZ coast, but this has to be the best! Jared was a great guide with immense knowledge. We managed to see penguins, seals, sea lions, albatross, shags and so much more. Couldn’t have asked for more!
Amazing experience. Jared was an excellent guide and showed us loads of cool wildlife including little blue penguins, albatross and fur seals. The boats are really good and it was a very relaxed trip with the best view of Nuggets Point, and it was just us there. Highly recommend!
10 out of 10
I highly recommend this tour! We did it early morning in June and had a fantastic experience! Despite being middle of winter the weather was fine and we were warm. Jared is an excellent guide and shares his wealth of knowledge about the local wildlife and history. We saw seals, penguins, gannets and had an albatross land right in the middle of our kayaks! The scenery is stunning. I have never kayaked before and managed easily. This tour gets a 10 out of 10 from me!
